BMT Fairtree MTB Academy ready for Fedhealth MTB Challenge
Franschhoek – The BMT Fairtree Mountain Bike (MTB) Academy has set an impressive goal for all eleven riders that will be seen in action at the 3rd annual Fedhealth MTB Challenge at the picturesque Boschendal Wine Estate on Saturday, 16 and Sunday, 17 September 2017.
Started in 2015, the goal of the Academy was to encourage Kayamandi residents to participate in sport, get outdoors and challenge themselves.
“Currently the Academy has 11 mountain bikers (10 male and 1 female) between the age of 17 and 30,” says Chris Norton, BMT Fairtree Academy. “By being part of an Academy the mountain bikers are given an outlet to destress, while taking part in a sport that they love. We’re looking forward to the Fedhealth MTB Challenge. Our riders have either entered the marathon (+-60km) or half marathon (+-28km). Our goal is to make top 20 in our respective categories, while our top three riders will be gunning for a podium finish.”
BMT Fairtree Academy rider, Luyanda Thobigunya (23) admits that it’s the speed and technical sections that attract him to the sport of mountain biking. “By being part of the Academy I get to take part in amazing races. It’s a dream come true. My goal on the day will be to do the best that I can. Hopefully I’ll be able to get onto the podium.”
Currently the only female rider at the Academy, Nophiwe Hala (22) is excited to take part in the Fedhealth MTB Challenge half marathon (+-28km). “I enjoy the sport of mountain biking because it is fun and I get to ride with my friends,” says Hala. “I really enjoy being part of a team. I’ll be taking part in the half marathon. My goal will be to have fun while completing yet another MTB race.”

The Fedhealth MTB Challenge moves to Boschendal Wine Estate in 2017. Celebrating its 3rd anniversary, the Fedhealth MTB Challenge caters for MTB enthusiasts of all ages. Junior mountain bikers can take part in the Fedhealth Kids MTB Events on Saturday, while Sunday is reserved for the more senior mountain bikers who can choose between a +-15km, +- 28km or +-60km route.
