Ironman acquires 2 more mtb stage races
The immigration to Australia begins, first Ironman acquired the Pioneer Race in New Zealand and now two Australian races have been added to the basket after already acquiring the RRR Mountain Bike Challenge in Cairns. The Cape to Cape MTB and its sister race – the Port to Port MTB stage race make up a basket of 5 mountain bike stage races acquired by Wanda Sports Group within the last year. The iconic Cape Epic was the first to be assimilated into the Wanda Sport stable.
The Cape to Cape MTB Stage race
The Cape to Cape MTB was first held in 2008 to a field that only reached about 100 participants. Nine years later it now holds the title as Australasia’s biggest MTB multi-stage endurance race with our biggest field going over 1300 competitors last year.
In that first year we started out with a vision, a grand plan to introduce a new major mountain biking event to the magnificent South West of WA. An event that engages the community, showcases the fabulous countryside and something that riders would enjoy and return to year after year.
“The acquisition of these two Australian MTB stage races shows our commitment to expand our mountain biking portfolio both regionally and globally,” said Andrew Messick, Chief Executive Officer for IRONMAN.

The Port to Port Mountain Bike Stage Race
The Port to Port MTB is an MTB stage race which takes place annually at the end of May. The race is designed to be fun and challenging for riders of all levels, from recreational to competitive.
Beginning at the idyllic Nelson Bay Marina, riders are greeted by four days of sandy tracks, fire trails, testing hill climbs, fast single tracks and steep descents that take in the spectacular Hunter Valley and Newcastle Region.
The Port to Port MTB is the sister event of Australia’s number one stage MTB event, the Cape to Cape MTB in South-West Western Australia.
How many stage races will be aprt of the the Ironman stable and who will be the next race to be added to the basket? We wait and see, odds are that more iconic South Africa stage races will be acquired, as it is the home of mountain bike stage races in the world.
