KAP Sani2C more than a Mountain Bike Stage Race
We met Glen Haw at the ABSA Cape Epic, after six stages of the Epic we bumped into a still very chirpy and fresh looking Farmer Glen. Over breakfast we chatted about the KAP Sani2C, the Cape Epic and stage racing in general in South Africa. KAP Sani2C is synonymous with mountain biking, in fact it is one of those stage races which you “have to have done or it is on your bucket list”. As mountain bikers we often focus on our own experiences and rewards we gain from a race. As our conversation unfolded Glen’ s passion for social entrepreneurship, creating jobs and changing lives across rural KwaZulu Natal became increasingly evident. Maintaining and growing the commitment to the communities who create trails and contribute to the KAP Sani2C stage race underpinned a lot of his thought patterns. KAP Sani2c more than a mountain bike stage race.
KAP Sani2c more than a mountain bike stage race
Every year the KAP Sani2C team innovate, offering new riders experiences both on the trail and also in the rider village. The KAP Sani2c will be 15 years old in 2019, and while it is one of the oldest mountain bike stage races in South Africa, it has also become the largest, with around 4200 riders enjoying three days of flowing trails from Himeville in the southern Drakensberg down to Scottburgh on the KZN south coast. The 2018 event saw R 10 million spent on services, provided by volunteers in aid of their schools and NGOs. For the Haw family, this legacy is as important as providing the best 3 days of riding that a mountain biker can ask for. What the Haw family has created in KAP Sani2C stands as an example of community social entrepreneurship and business excellence. It also demonstrates just what can be achieved when you harness the power of a community to the benefit of all.
