Twenty-seven years ago, Nelson Mandela was released unconditionally from prison, marking the end of his 27 year sentence behind bars. To celebrate this momentous occasion in South African history, cycling enthusiasts from around South Africa are encouraged to take part in the FREEDOM RACE; an exciting mountain biking event created to pay respect to Madiba’s legacy, while also promoting KZN’s unique Heritage Route and countryside.

Open to serious athletes and the family alike, the FREEDOM RACE offers riders beautiful and scenic routes and an important historical and cultural experience based on South Africa’s history. Riders can choose between:

• An individual ride for more experienced cyclists (+/- 60km)
• A family/individual ride over a shorter course (40km)
• A brand new family/individual ride over an even shorter course (20km)

The 60km race will start at 6.30am from the eNanda Adventure centre, which is near the Inanda Dam wall, only 20min from Durban. The individuals will take on the beautiful Shembe Plateau above the Dam, before circling back around to the Dam wall. They will then head along a short road section to Molweni Village, where they then turn off onto Single Track and head along the rivers and tributaries towards Durban. The Riders then finish the 60km route with an easy sprint down the Durban Promenade, finishing on the Suncoast Sundeck.

The 40km riders will start at 8.30am from eNanda Adventure Centre. The riders head along a short road section to Molweni Village. Here they then turn off onto beautiful single Track routes and head along the rivers and tributaries towards Durban. The Riders then finish the 40km route with a gentle ride along the Durban Promenade, finishing on the Suncoast Sundeck.
The 20km riders will start at 7:00am from KwaDabeka Green Corridor Go Park.
