Roadies with an addiction for Dirt
2019 sees a wave of road cyclist rushing to get dirty on the trails of the Absa Cape Epic.
South African king of sprinting and first South African stage winner of the Tour De France, Robbie Hunter will be taking on his forst Absa Cape Epic.
“So the Absa Cape Epic decision seems to have come at a great time to get myself back motivated and fit again.” “I have to say I’m not super fit like I was and I definitely won’t ever be there again” he acknowledged. “But I’m super happy to be back on the bike and enjoying cycling as it’s an amazing sport. Actually I have to say thanks to the Absa Cape Epic organisers for every year knocking on my door to come do the event.”
“In the past road cyclists never went near a MTB or cross bike. Today so many people use them on a regular basis to keep the boredom out of their job by mixing it up a bit. But not only that, mountain biking and cyclocross has definitely brought road cycling a number of champions of the past fifteen years.
Anna VD Breggen the the road World Champion is equally enthusiastic about the challenge ahead. “The Absa Cape Epic is my first goal of the season” Van Der Breggen confirmed. “I am looking forward to a big adventure and to do something I never did before. To work with such an experienced team and of course four Cape Epic winner and World Marathon Champ Annika is really motivating me. I cannot wait to participate in one of the toughest mountain biking challenges in the world” the Dutch star concluded.
Reflecting on the challenge ahead Petacchi smiled: “The stages are over 100 kilometres long,
you take part as a pair and at the end of the day you sleep in a tent. In short, I think it will be a lot of fun.” “We are training without the methodology and the stress of when we were in professional cycling. Our goal will be to try to finish the race, because we never competed in a MTB race before and we do not have the technique of others” Petacchi revealed.
The Absa Cape Epic will therefore be an exciting new adventure for Petacchi and Chicchi. As it will be for their prospective neighbours in the race village, it is not every day you have one of the most celebrated cyclists in the world camping two feet away from you in the race village.
As a fan of cycling, all types it will be great having these legends on two wheels exploring the trails of the western Cape.
