THE ROUTE IS KING
The 2017 edition of the Old Mutual joBerg2c is done and dusted. We will be adding in more sections of single track happiness for 2018 and we will continue to strive for a balance across this monumental mountain biking journey.
The 2017 route guide below will serve as a guideline as we will not change the route drastically for 2018.
The Route is King – 99.5% off-road, Subaru track (actually, Jeep track but we cannot say Jeep), tons of single-track, rural secondary roads and some k munching district road… There’s only about 10km of tar along the entire 900km.
The Old Mutual joBerg2c is ride where the destination is less important than the journey. It is about the variation and beauty of this incredible country. You will ride trails never ridden and you will meet communities you would never have never known.
Make no mistake the Old Mutual joBerg2c is a tough but extremely rewarding ride if you have prepared your backside for 9 days.
The following detailed descriptions of each day’s route is a guide as to what to expect.
Adrenalin and adventure in the Karoo
Three days of pure bliss under the African sun and the Milky Way in the Karoo. From 27 – 29 April 2018, this and more await adrenalin junkies in this MTB Trek 2 Teebus that stretches over 210 km with 2 800 m of elevation gain. (Teebus is a well known landmark in the Steynsburg region in the Karoo.)
This route will mainly consist of jeep and single-track crossing private farms around Steynsburg with some sections of gravel roads. All stages will start and finish at Harmonie farm, 12 km west of Steynsburg. (GPS Coordinates: 31* 21’30.07″ S 25* 43’08.30″ E).
Stunning scenery on all 3 days awaits all riders. Day 1 crossing lots of private land and some sheep trails. Day 2 will include the majestic Bullhoek pass. This pass is not open to the public but was built as a service road for the Orange Fish Tunnel. With 5.5km and over 400 meters of climbing this will make you legs burn but will be rewarding with beautiful Karoo views and King and Queen of the mountain. On day 3 every rider will have the chance to go underground into the service tunnel of the Orange Fish tunnel and exsperience one of the best engineering masterpieces of its time. After crossing the open water channel at the tunnel outlet it will be an amazing memory to take home as the last 10km awaits.
