The Silk Route 12 280 km in 145 days on a bicycle
Actor Ivan Zimmermann will depart on a cycling expedition from Beijing to Istanbul on May 14th 2016. The Silk Route, also known as the Silk Road, connects East and West Asia, even extending to parts of Europe. It originally consisted of a network of trade routes which were established during the Chinese Han dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD), when silk traders travelled to and from different parts of Asia. The Silk Route cycle tour is undertaken annually by a number of cycling enthusiasts from all over the world. It will test Zimmermann and his fellow riders to the limit: temperatures will range between minus 10 to 45 degrees Celsius, and the elevation can range from zero to 4 500 metres above sea level.
Zimmermann says about his coming journey: ‘I am excited to go further into fluctuating temperatures and landscapes, and meet more interesting people from diverse cultures.’ He adds that ‘this is one adventure that will be worth every drop of sweat and pain. I look forward to travelling through, Iran, the Pamir Highway in Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, the distant Mongolia and the hills of Anatolia.’
He will be riding with 14 other cyclists that he has never met before and together they have to complete 12 280km in 145 days.
The travelling schedule stretches through the “Silk Route” that consists of ten countries, including China, Mongolia, Russia, Kazahkstan, Iran and Turkey.
Zimmermann will help LIPCO Law for All`s non-profit company, Fees for All, to raise funds this year. This organisation wants to address the financial issues faced by students and to advance their right to equal opportunity and higher education.
