Pedalling to the Medal at XCO Championships

Leche du Plessis

She may be small, but Luché du Plessis proved she’s a cycling powerhouse as she conquered the rugged terrains of Pietermaritzburg at the South African XCO Championships at Cascades recently. Representing Gauteng and racing in the Nipper Girls category, the Grade 4 learner from Curro Hazeldean faced an uphill battle after a rocky start left her at the back of the pack.

Like a true champion, Luché didn’t let that derail her dreams. With the determination of a pro, she charged through the challenging 2km laps, gaining an impressive 11 positions in lap one alone. In a nail-biting finish, Luché claimed the number one spot in South Africa, joining an elite group of only three Gauteng riders to take the top podium step.

Luché’s cycling journey is far from over! Her passion for cycling and dedication to training have put her at the top of the Cross-Country XCM Marathon log, and she’s now set her sights on being selected for the Gauteng XCM team for 2023. Watch this space!
