Cascades

Cascades MTB park is the home of Mountain biking in KZN. Cascades has been host to the 2009, 2011 , and 2012 World-cups. Cascades has a number of XCO, XCE and Down hill trails. The public are free to use these trails at no charge.

Cascades has been used as the unofficial “home” of mountain biking in KZN for some years now as it offers superb riding conditions in the heart of the province. Being located next to a shopping centre also enhances its appeal through proximity to facilities and parking.

South Africa hosted its first World Cup ever in 2009 and Pietermaritzburg was chosen as the host city as it is one of only a few cities that can accommodate Cross Country, Downhill and Xc Eliminator at the same venue. Cascades hosted the 2011 and 2012 World cups and will be hosting the World masters Championship and the Elite World Championship in August. Preparing for this event is well under way. There are two new disciplines that will be taking place at Cascades, these are Trials and Cross country eliminator. World champs will be taking place between 21st of August and the 1st of September 2013

The KZN MTB Commission has taken charge of maintaining the Cascades area.

General cleanliness of the area.
Maintenance of XC and DH trails to ensure that they do not deteriorate and become dangerous.
Building of new XC trails
Erection of signage (on poles) to mark the trails.
The Cascades area is considered to be the finest mountain biking location in South Africa, given the nature of the terrain, the proximity to a shopping centre, the proximity to a city and the central locality within the province. It thus allows the Msundusi Municipality to declare itself a true cycling city
