Duration – 3 – 4hours, Intermediate
Configuration: Various
Trailhead: Groenvlei Guest Farm
General Information: Farm roads, tracks and hiking trails. Suitable for children if you stick to the farm roads. The Karoo really comes into its own between May and September even though it will be freezing.

From Groenvlei, drive to Krieglerskraal and park your car, then pedal back the way you came for about a kilometre to the red gate on your right. The route follows farm tracks all the way; make sure you take water, hats and something to eat along the way.

From here, follow the detailed directions (your hosts will brief you) up two passes, through at least eight gates, past reservoirs and over steep necks. Several beacons will guide you along your way as you ride past Muishoek, Witkop and other farms, with the occasional stop for refreshments at some of the fountains along the way. Don’t forget to fill up those water bottles when you have a chance, especially in summer.

Enjoy the view, endless space, burning legs and the speedy stretch home on the main road.

The quiet and peaceful Groenvlei (“Green Marsh”) of today was known as Helhoek (Hell’s Corner) in days gone by. If this little piece of information tickles your interest, read more about the farm’s history since 1837 on the website
