The core activity of Bokpoort is horse-riding, but mountain-biking is encouraged on four “loops”. The technical 12-kilometre trail forms the steepest and most difficult part of the annual Clarens MTB Classic. By alternately pedalling and pushing your bicycle, it is possible to access the rock pool and waterfall on the property, or take some time out to watch resident herds of springbok, black wildebeest, blesbok and mountain reedbuck. This is a very demanding circuit with potential for portage. A word of caution – do not attempt technical sections that are beyond your current skills level.
From the reception area at 1 800 metres above sea level, you ascend via a series of ups and downs along an eight-kilometre jeep track to the Bush Camp at 1 950 metres. The four-kilometre return is all downhill along one of the single-track horse trails. Take the portage route if you have even the slightest doubt about your ability to negotiate the rocks and steep gradients. Incredible views of the Maluti Mountains abound on this hike ‘n ride, providing a unique perspective of the sandstone geology of the area.
If the mountain-bike trail terrified you onto a road bike, there is the most incredible piece of road cycling in the country here; a 68-kilometre ride from Clarens into the Golden Gate National Park. Beautiful, smooth, cambered roads with generous road shoulders and minimal traffic will have body and soul begging for more.
From Clarens, take the R712 to the Golden Gate National Park. The turnoff to Bokpoort is five kilometres further, on your right.
