Brandberg Mountain Desert Gravel
The Brandberg — Namibia’s highest mountain at 2,573m — creates a dramatic backdrop for some of Africa’s most remote gravel riding. The surrounding desert plains, dry riverbeds and ancient rock art sites combine to make this a destination that goes far beyond the riding itself.
The Routes
The 35km Ugab River Gravel follows the ephemeral Ugab River west from the Brandberg Rest Camp, passing through a ribbon of wild fig and ana trees — a green oasis in the desert — before looping back via gravel plateau roads. The 65km Circumnavigation is a full day undertaking requiring excellent navigation skills and complete self-sufficiency with water and food. The views of the Brandberg from the north face are unlike anything else in southern Africa.
Getting There
From Swakopmund take the B2 east to Henties Bay junction, then the C35 north toward Uis. The Brandberg Rest Camp is clearly signposted. GPS: -21.1523, 14.5817.
