Cape Epic stage 1 race report Robertson

Stage 1 of the Cape Epic was hot, dry and very long, a tough start for all the pros. The ladies race saw legendary Epic winners Annika and Ariana tussling for the lead, as both teams experienced mechanicals, Team Investec Songo and Team Spur finished within seconds of each other.

Annika and her dynamic young new partner maintained the Orange winners jersey in what was a very tough stage for most of the women.

Team Spur is looking really competitive this year with Githa and Ariana who are racing together for the first time, finishing close behind Team Investec Songo. Its wonderful to see Ariana in great form and looking like she is enjoying racing again.

Githa raced well in her first experience of the Cape Epic, and came through her initiation with flying colours.

Sabine Spitz the legendary mountain biker had a terrible day in the sun experiencing severe cramps which limited their ability to be competitive. They are a very strong competitive team and will be fighting for a podium in stage 2.

This team reflects womens racing and the amazing spirit and partnership that is forged between strong confident cyclists.

Ariana and her new partner Githa chased hard to catch Team Investec Songo but also experienced mechanicals. The unforgiving long dry farm roads draininh the energy especially with the hot sun baking down on the riders.

Annie Last and South Africa Champ Mariska Strauss finished really strong, great having the SA Champ represented on the podium. Exciting racing is ahead of us as we stay in this valley for stage 2, which will bring similar conditions.
