FNB Magalies Monster celebrates 16^th anniversary with upgraded routes

 North West Province – The 16^th anniversary of the North West Province’s most revered single day mountain bike (MTB) race, the FNB Magalies Monster MTB Classic, will treat MTB enthusiast of all levels (novice to elite)to an experience like no other.

Taking place at the ATKV Buffelspoort on Saturday, 02 June 2018 entrants can choose between a 15km Fun Ride, the 35km “Half Monster” and the 70km “Ultimate Monster (which includes the infamous 6km Monster Climb)”.

“This event is ideal for all mountain bikers,” says Harry Schubert, Course Designer FNB Magalies Monster MTB Classic.  “Last year the Fun Ride was slightly longer.  This year we’ve taken out a section that passes through a citrus plantation.  We’ve also taken out a section near the start and finish.  The shorter route is sure to be more attractive to newcomers and less experienced riders.”

“The ‘Half Monster’ and ‘Ultimate Monster’ will not share the steep technical ascent up to the plateau from the Buffelspoort Valley or the tricky descent towards the finish at ATKV,” confirms Schubert.  “Once the two routes have split, the 35km route will head up towards the top of the plateau on a steep single track climb.   After a scenic stretch on top of the plateau the route will drop down a newly designed, exhilarating single trail heading towards the water point near the tar road across from the dam entrance. There the riders will continue along a single trail that runs parallel to the tar road and links up with the 70km route before crossing the Sterkstroom Stream towards the finish”.

“We’ve added a 4km loop to the ‘Ultimate Monster’,” continues Schubert.  “The loop will be added near the top section of the Alpha Berry farm.  This will give the riders some respite before the final tough climb to the top of the plateau and the tricky descent towards the finish.  The FNB Magalies Monster ‘Ultimate Monster’ is one of the toughest and most demanding one day events in the country.  Mountain bikers taking part in this event for the first time must be well prepared and make sure that they pace themselves.  Don’t forget that the down- hills are as technical as the up-hills.”
