Boschendal Farm Estate (The Retreat) was buzzing with excitement on Saturday 07 September 2019 when excited junior mountain bikers toed the line at the 5th annual Fedhealth MTB Challenge Kids Event.
A highlight on the SA mountain bike calendar, the kids event caters for ages 0 – 13 with junior MTB enthusiasts choosing between a: 500m (0-5 years), 1.5km (6-9 years) and a 5km (10 – 13 years) event.
Max Boskovic (4) from Vredehoek was the first rider to cross the finish line in the 500m Fedhealth MTB Challenge Kids Event. “I came first,” said a very happy Max. “I had fun. I fell, but it wasn’t sore. I wanted to win. I will definitely come back every year even when I am 20.”
Makayla Casserley (5) from Plattekloof took part in the 500m event for the second year in a row. “I like racing,” says Makayla. “Last year I fell, but I’ve been practising on a dirt road and didn’t fall once today. Next year I’ll take part in the 1.5km event.”
Making his 1.5km Fedhealth MTB Challenge Kids Event debut on the day (after dominating the 500m event in 2017 and 2018), Tyler Van Gesselleen (6) from Stellenbosch sprinted from start to finish. “I had a good race,” says a very happy Tyler. “The first climb was the toughest, but I do like climbing. I’ve been practising.”
According to Suri Anthony (8) from Wetton she had a good race. “The big rocks are the toughest part. The best part is when I lose my Daddy, he runs next to me. Yes I will come back next year.”
Mika du Plessis (11) from Stellenbosch crossed the finish line first in the 5km Fedhealth MTB Challenge Kids Event. “The event was very nice,” says Mika. “I only wanted to have fun while giving my best. I was surprised to cross the finish line first, but I liked it.”
Ivan Malan (9) from Durbanville made his event debut on the day. “My parents thought that it would be a nice family day out. I enjoyed the race. There were a lot of climbs, downhills and rocks. It was very nice.”
Savannah Marx (9) from Somerset West also made her Fedhealth MTB Challenge Kids Event debut on the day. “It was my first ride. Everyone was friendly and helped me. I loved it.”
“Thank you to all the kids who joined us at the fifth Fedhealth MTB Challenge at Boschendal. We hope you had fun on the trails, and enjoyed swapping race stories with Mom or Dad afterwards. It’s awesome to know that our young riders also support this event! Keep challenging yourselves and we hope to welcome you back on the trails next year,” says Jeremy Yatt, Fedhealth Principal Officer.
EXCITING NEWS: Specialized South Africa will be giving away a stunning Kids Bicycle to the value of R6000. To qualify for the prize junior mountain bikers had to enter the 2019 Fedhealth MTB Challenge Kids Event, while their parents signed up for the Specialized Bicycles SA newsletter. The draw will take place on Monday 09 September and the winner will be notified by email.

The 5th annual Fedhealth MTB Challenge will offer prize money to the first three finishers (open male and open female category) in the Marathon (+- 60km) and Half Marathon (+-30km) while all entrants (Fun Ride included) will stand a chance to take home spectacular sponsor prizes.
