Mabira Forest MTB — Uganda
Mabira Forest is Uganda’s most accessible primary rainforest — a 300km² swathe of ancient tropical forest straddling the main road between Kampala and Jinja, preserved against significant pressure as a protected reserve. The MTB trail network here threads through dense canopy where dappled light illuminates red laterite soil and the soundscape is pure Africa: chimpanzees, colobus monkeys, hornbills and 300+ bird species.
The Trails
The 12km Forestry Loop uses the reserve’s management roads — wide, well-graded and appropriate for all fitness levels. The 22km Primate Singletrack dives deeper into the forest where chimp and red-tailed monkey sightings are frequent — guided only. The 28km Nile Source Trail connects to the network heading toward Jinja and the source of the Nile at Bujagali — an iconic East African destination combining MTB with the most historically significant waterway in Africa.
Kampala Day Trip
Mabira is the go-to day ride destination for Kampala’s growing MTB community. The Kampala MTB Club runs regular weekend rides here. The 54km from Kampala makes it feasible as a there-and-back ride for the very fit or as a car-shuttle mission.
Getting There
From Kampala take the Kampala–Jinja highway east for 54km to Najjembe/Lugazi. The forest entrance is clearly signposted. GPS: 0.4167, 33.0333.
