Maluti Mountain Gravel Routes
Lesotho — the Mountain Kingdom — sits entirely above 1,400m and its highland plateau tops out at over 3,400m. The gravel roads threading through the Maluti Mountains rank among the most dramatic in Africa: wide views across treeless basalt grassland, Basotho villages, herds of mountain ponies, and the occasional condor circling overhead.
The Routes
The 18km Sani Pass Descent is Africa’s most famous gravel bike descent — from the Lesotho plateau (2,874m) down the spectacular switchback road to the KwaZulu-Natal escarpment. Most riders shuttle to the top. The 45km Maluti Ridge Gravel is a point-to-point high altitude route along the escarpment rim — exposed, technical and absolutely stunning. The 25km Mokhotlong Valley Loop is the accessible entry point to Highland Lesotho gravel, with less elevation change but dramatic scenery throughout.
Sani Pass Context
Sani Pass is the only road crossing of the Drakensberg escarpment between KwaZulu-Natal and Lesotho. It’s a 4×4-only road for vehicles, but perfectly rideable on gravel bike with appropriate fitness. The Sani Mountain Lodge at the top is the highest pub in Africa at 2,874m — a well-earned stop.
Getting There
From KwaZulu-Natal: take the R617 from Underberg to Himeville, then the gravel road to Sani Pass border. From Lesotho: take the A3 from Maseru east toward Mokhotlong. GPS top of pass: -29.5786, 29.2769.
