Mulanje Mountain is a revelation — a massive granite inselberg rising 3,002m above the Shire Highlands of southern Malawi, covering 650km² and creating its own weather system. The surrounding tea estates, fynbos-like heath and crystal streams make it one of the most biodiverse locations in central Africa. The mountain hosts the Mulanje cedar (Widdringtonia whytei) — Africa’s tallest indigenous conifer — found nowhere else on earth, and endemic species of chameleon, gecko and butterfly on every trail.

The Trails

The 15km Tea Estate Circuit is the accessible intro — rolling through the surrounding Lujeri and Blantyre Nchima tea estates on well-maintained plantation roads with Mulanje’s towering faces as constant backdrop. The 20km Likhubula River Trail follows the Likhubula River into the mountain’s lower forest zone through cedar woodland and endemic protea heath. The 25km Chambe Plateau Approach climbs into the plateau itself — technical, remote and requiring guide support.

Getting There

From Blantyre take the M2 south to Mulanje town (65km, approximately 1 hour). Likhubula is 15km further on a gravel road. GPS: -15.9333, 35.5167.
