Multi-sport athletes set for double the challenge in the Magaliesberg
Regulars on the XTERRA racing circuit, Nico Sterk (Centurion) and Sylvia van Tromp (Vanderbijlpark) will once again be seen in action in Buffelspoort, but this time round they will compete over a two day period, first at the FNB Magalies Monster MTB Classic on Saturday, 03 June 2017 followed by the FNB Platinum Trail Run on Sunday, 04 June 2017. Both events will start and finish at the ATKV, Buffelspoort.
Sterk will take on the 70km FNB Magalies Monster MTB Classic and 24km FNB Platinum Trail Run. “I love the Buffelspoort Valley,” says Sterk. “It’s not too far from Gauteng, but you still get to enjoy nature and feel like you’re far from city life. I enjoy the tough factor that comes with both the Magalies Monster and the Platinum Trail Run. Being a multi-sport athlete, this will be one of the rare opportunities to display my abilities and skill while competing against top-notch mountain bikers and trail runners.”
“The Magalies Monster is a classic marathon style of MTB racing,” continues Sterk. “The terrain varies from extremely rocky sections, to sand and everything else in between. There are a lot of climbs including two major climbs, one of which is the infamous “Monster”, the most iconic feature of this race. The biggest draw cards, however, are the spectacular views and natural surrounding that will be enjoyed on route. The Magalies Monster definitely is a bucket list race to do, while the weekend offers an event for everyone. The Platinum Trail Run is one of the most scenic and fun trail run events on the calendar. The route is challenging, but rewarding with long steep climbs and fast down hills.”
Van Tromp will make her debut at both the 70km FNB Magalies Monster MTB Classic and 12km FNB Platinum Trail Run.
“I am attracted by the challenge of riding in the Magaliesberg,” says Tromp. “Everyone should conquer ‘The Monster’ at least once. This will also be the first time that I take part in the Platinum Trail Run. Stillwater Sports always host world class events that are well organised. The routes are clearly marked and the race is ‘family friendly’. I’m looking forward to experiencing two of their events over one weekend. Doing the ‘double up’ also makes you a tough cookie.”
