Namaqua 40km Flower Trail

Kamieskroon is a tiny N7 village in the Kamiesberg mountains of Namaqualand, 67km south of Springbok — and in August and September, it becomes one of the most sought-after addresses in South Africa. The surrounding Succulent Karoo explodes into the most spectacular wildflower display in the Southern Hemisphere: orange Namaqualand daisies, yellow gazanias, white bokbaai vygies and hundreds of other species transform the rocky hillsides and valley floors into a colour spectacle that has drawn visitors, photographers and botanists from around the world for generations.

The Riding

The most accessible wildflower riding from Kamieskroon is a 40km informal loop on public gravel roads west and north of the village — through the heart of the flower-covered terrain. No permits are needed and the roads carry minimal traffic, allowing riders to stop freely for the frequent moments of astonishment that characterise this landscape in peak flower season. The Kamieskroon Mountain Pass section of the N7 provides a challenging tarred climb with extraordinary escarpment views that is popular as a training road.

More serious riders head to the Leliefontein 49km circular route — a challenging full-day ride through the Kamiesberg uplands from the historic Leliefontein Wesleyan Mission Village (43km from Kamieskroon). A permit is required from the Namaqualand District Council before riding. A shorter 30km one-way option is also available. The terrain is significantly more demanding than the Namaqua National Park roads — the Kamiesberg uplands are high, exposed, rocky and demanding in all seasons.

Kamieskroon is on the N7 between Garies and Springbok, approximately 490km north of Cape Town. GPS: -30.2167, 17.9333. Kamieskroon Tourism: +27 27 672 1631. Fill up with fuel before entering the Namaqua NP — the next reliable fuel after Kamieskroon is Springbok (67km) or Garies (52km south).
