Richtersveld 50km Desert Loop

The Richtersveld is one of the most extraordinary and challenging cycling environments in South Africa — a UNESCO World Heritage Site mountain desert in the far northwest of the Northern Cape, jointly managed with the Namibian side as the |Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park. The landscape is unlike anything else in the country: jagged mountain desert terrain where temperatures regularly exceed 45°C in summer, rainfall is below 50mm per year in some areas, and the nearest fuel is 80km away at Port Nolloth. It is not a cycling destination for the unprepared.

What to Expect

There are no marked or maintained MTB trails within the Richtersveld. Cycling is on jeep tracks, 4×4 roads and natural desert paths — all requiring a highly capable mountain bike (ideally a hardtail or rigid adventure bike with wide tyres), full self-sufficiency and extensive off-road desert riding experience. The terrain is rocky mountain desert: loose shale, dry river crossings, sand sections and exposed ridgelines with no shade. Navigation requires a downloaded GPS track and a backup paper map — mobile signal is absent throughout the park.

The rewards for riders who commit to these requirements are extraordinary: some of the most dramatic desert mountain scenery in Africa, quiver tree forests of extraordinary size and density, the gorge landscape of the Orange River canyon, and a complete absence of other human beings that is becoming genuinely rare in the modern world. The Richtersveld is one of the last true wildernesses accessible to cyclists in South Africa.

Access and Practicalities

Entry is via the Sendelingsdrift Gate, reached by a 4×4 gravel road 80km from Port Nolloth. The Orange River crossing at Sendelingsdrift is by pontoon boat (fee applies). SANParks accommodation must be booked well in advance. Carry minimum 5 litres of water per hour of riding, a full repair kit, emergency food and bivouac equipment, and always inform park reception of your planned route and expected return time. Never ride in the Richtersveld alone.
