There are less than a 100 entries left in the very limited-entry Ride2Nowhere three-day stage race, which takes place around the charming town of McGregor from 7 to 9 September.
The event – which features various options across the three days, with a short (40km) and long (60km) option per day as well as solo and team categories for mixed, women and men’s teams – has space for 400 riders only. The 2017 event sold out and the 2018 edition is fast going that way too.
The Ride2Nowhere is a very special opportunity to explore this remote region of the cape on a mountain bike, by getting access to routes and trails you wouldn’t on any other day. The riding is typically ‘Karoo’ – more rugged and technical than many of the other more groomed trails that see countless wheels per year.
The routes take riders into some very remote areas which sometimes make you feel as if you are riding in the middle of nowhere. A large portion of the trails are not open to the public having been created exclusively for the Ride2Nowhere and with a limit set on the number of entries allowed this also ensures no congestions on route so you can just enjoy riding the trails in your own time and pace. All in all, the route offers a good challenge to the racing snakes, but it is still doable for the weekend warriors.
However the epic trails is far from the only reason riders return year-after-year. “It’s about the vibe,” is what you’re more-than-likely to hear from anyone who’s ridden the event. Central to this is the quirky town of McGregor, around which the race is based.
“The village of McGregor is central to the event,” says Erik Kleinhans, who won last year’s team category with Robert Hobson. “It’s just so cool to go to an arty little place in the middle of nowhere. I really like that mountain biking takes you to these kinds of destinations.”
In terms of art, creative and spiritual people have gravitated to the area for decades. This has resulted in the town becoming something of a permanent art route. For riders and supporters alike that affords the opportunity to wander in wonder through the various small galleries, installations and studios.
