The Springbok 182 Mile Bikepacking Route — 293km of gravel and tar through the Namaqualand mountains and Bushmanland desert in a multi-day loop from Springbok — is the Northern Cape’s most ambitious cycling adventure. The route was developed for self-sufficient bikepacking riders who want to experience the full diversity of the Namaqualand landscape: the dramatic granite koppies above Springbok, the rock art and wildlife of Goegap Nature Reserve, the extraordinary isolation of the Bushmanland desert toward Pofadder, the copper mining heritage of Okiep and Nababeep, and the coastal mountain approach from Steinkopf on the return.

The Route

Day 1 typically heads east from Springbok to Goegap Nature Reserve (35km), then south through the reserve and onto the R359 into the Bushmanland desert. Day 2 continues the desert traverse toward Pofadder — flat, open, remote desert riding through the quartz plains of Bushmanland with the Pofadder Hotel as the overnight stop. Day 3 reverses direction northwest through Okiep and Nababeep, following the copper country heritage route through the historic mines. Day 4 completes the return to Springbok via Steinkopf on the N7 mountain approach. The route is designed to be ridden in 3-4 days depending on fitness and stops, with full self-sufficiency between resupply points.

Namaqua Quest Connection

The annual Namaqua Quest 3-Day MTB event (September) provides a fully-supported version of the same Namaqualand terrain — marked routes, water points, medical backup and accommodation at the Okiep Country Hotel. For riders who want the experience without the full logistics burden of self-supported bikepacking, the Namaqua Quest is the ideal gateway. Entries at namaquaquest.co.za.

Getting There

Springbok is 570km from Cape Town on the N7. GPS: -29.6641, 17.8866. Tourism: +27 27 712 8035.
