How to track riders at the 2016 Tour De France

Dimension Data is using the most advanced tracking technology to help fans follow all the action during this year’s race.

For armchair fans and keen cyclists and perhaps those of us who are obsessed with data (the quantified self cyclist), the 103rd edition of the biggest race in the cycling calendar, the Tour de France is all changing and about to thrill you. When the riders depart from Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy on Saturday July 2 for the first day of the three-week event, every one of the 198 bikes in the peloton will be fitted with a device designed and developed by Dimension Data.

This GPS telemetry device, weighing just 60g attached to the underside of the riders’ saddles will provide the following data of each rider:

#speed

#gradient he is climbing

#wind speed

#temperature

#the group he is in

#the group relative to the rest of the peloton

#the groups speed

#the groups gradient

This environmental data provided to you through updated website, TV graphics and social media posts, enabling Dimension Data to tell better stories from within the peloton.position vs leader
