The Chardonnay is the most popular of the three events as it takes place over the first weekend of the 10-day race period and offers riders the chance to be amongst the first to experience the brand new sections of the first Switchback route.
This year the Chardonnay riders will be the first to experience the NEW Switchback route. The FNB Wines2Whales Switchback is no simple route reverse.
It is a dramatic reimagining of the trails which usually take riders from the winelands to the whales each year. The Chardonnay is unique in the stage race world, it is a race dedicated to women!
The elite women start at the front of the race each morning and are able to race unimpeded.
After the elite women start the rest of the bunches are a celebration of women on bikes, the atmosphere is festive “seriousGEES” and the racing is hot or what you want it to be.
The Chardonnay event is dedicated to Women’s racing and we see some of South Africa’s, and often the world’s, best female riders battle it out for the overall prize money and leaders’ jersey.
