Lubricating the chain of an e-bike requires lifting the rear wheel to engage the drivetrain in a forward direction. This is cumbersome and can be difficult to do on one’s own. The Squirt eZ-Luber uses a turn hook to fix the crank to the chainring, making it possible to roll the drivetrain backwards, as one would on a conventional bike, to lubricate the chain effectively. “The mechanics of an e-bike motor means that the cranks spin backwards freely without engaging the chainring. To lock the chainring to the crank, the Squirt eZ-Luber slots around the crank arm and then hooks the chainring with a cylindrical turn hook,” Van Wyk explained. “It takes 20 seconds to fit the Squirt eZ-Luber to your bike and another 30 seconds or so to lubricate your chain effectively. This makes it a quick, sub-1-minute job, which you can do on your own. We’ve field tested the Squirt eZ-Luber at FNB W2W Pinotage, the Lions Karoo to Coast, and To Hell and Back. Even water point volunteers, with no previous cycling experience, are able to use the tool to help riders after one demonstration.”
