Spitzkoppe MTB Trails
Rising 700m above the Namib plains, the Spitzkoppe granite inselberg is one of Namibia’s most photographed landmarks — and one of Africa’s most surreal mountain biking venues. The community-managed trail network threads through giant boulders, across sun-baked desert flats, and past 4,000-year-old San rock paintings in a landscape that feels completely removed from the modern world.
The Trails
The 12km Granite Loop is the most popular route, navigating the base of the main Spitzkoppe massif over technical granite slabs and compacted gravel. The 23km Circumnavigation is the full experience — a full loop around the entire formation, taking in the Little Spitzkoppe and the famous Arch Rock. The 8km Desert Connector links to the community campsite and is suitable for hardtail riders new to the area.
What Makes It Special
Riding here at golden hour with the granite glowing orange-red, with kudu and oryx grazing on the plains and a sky full of stars emerging — this is MTB in Africa at its most elemental. The community campsite means you can stay the night, making it a multi-day destination combining riding, wildlife and one of the darkest night skies on the continent.
Getting There
From Swakopmund take the B2 east to Karibib, then the C36 north. Follow signs to Spitzkoppe. The last 8km is gravel road. GPS: -21.8323, 15.1819.
