Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary offers what is arguably Africa’s most unique MTB experience: self-guided riding among free-roaming wildlife in a 4,500 hectare game reserve. No fences, no motor vehicles on the trail network, just you, your bike and the animals. Hippo graze on the trail at night and cross paths with riders at dawn. Warthogs trot ahead of your front wheel. The sanctuary’s herbivore wildlife — no dangerous predators — means the experience is genuinely accessible.

The Trails

The 8km Hippo Haunt Trail circles the hippo pool and wetlands — flat, well-graded and spectacular for wildlife viewing. Best ridden at dawn or dusk when hippos are most active. The 18km Nyonyane Mountain Trail climbs the 1,320m Nyonyane peak (Execution Rock) that dominates the sanctuary — technical rocky ascent with sweeping views over Ezulwini Valley and the Mdimba Mountains. The 12km Wildlife Loop is the most game-rich route, passing through the main game areas where zebra, wildebeest and kudu are commonly encountered.

Getting There

From Mbabane take the MR3 south through the Ezulwini Valley. Mlilwane is clearly signed 20km from Mbabane. From Johannesburg: 4 hours via Ngwenya border post. GPS: -26.4833, 31.1833.
