Congo Nile Trail — Rwanda
The Congo Nile Trail is Rwanda’s flagship adventure cycling route — a 227km gravel and singletrack journey along the shore of Lake Kivu and through the volcanic highlands of western Rwanda. It’s the most comprehensively developed bikepacking route in East Africa, with community guesthouses and ecolodges spaced approximately 30–40km apart along the entire route.
The Route
Starting from Rubavu (Gisenyi) on the Congo border at the northern tip of Lake Kivu, the trail rolls south along lakeside cliffs, through tea and coffee plantations, over volcanic ridges and through traditional fishing communities for 227km to Rusizi (Cyangugu) on the Burundi border. The northern section through Kibuye is the most dramatic — high ridgeline riding above the lake with the Virunga volcanoes visible to the northwest. The southern section passes through less-touristed villages and denser agricultural landscape.
Infrastructure
The Rwanda Development Board has invested significantly in trail infrastructure. The majority of overnight stops offer basic but clean accommodation (USD$15–30 per night). Bike mechanics are available in Rubavu and Kibuye. The trail is GPS-mapped and available on major apps.
