Marrakech Palmeraie Desert Gravel
The Palmeraie — Marrakech’s ancient palm grove — extends northeast of the city for several kilometres, and beyond it the landscape opens into the pre-Saharan foothills: flat-topped red earth plateaux, dry riverbeds and scattered Berber villages. For riders staying in or near Marrakech, this is the most accessible quality gravel riding in North Africa.
The Routes
The 18km Palmeraie Circuit threads through the palm grove itself on sandy piste and minor roads — accessible to riders of all fitness levels and combining well with a Medina visit. The 40km Atlas Foothills Gravel heads northeast from the Palmeraie into the pre-Atlas foothills — more challenging terrain with gravel climbs, panoramic Atlas views and the opportunity to visit traditional weekly Berber market villages.
Bike Hire and Tours
Multiple quality bike hire and guiding operations run from central Marrakech. For the Palmeraie Circuit, a rental bike works well. For the Atlas Foothills route, a gravel bike or hardtail MTB is recommended.
Getting There
The Palmeraie starts 8km northeast of the Medina via the Route de Casablanca. Most Marrakech riads can arrange bike hire or transfers. GPS: 31.6785, -7.9617.
