Atlas Mountains MTB — Imlil and Toubkal
The Atlas Mountains above Marrakech represent the most developed MTB destination in North Africa. The trails here are ancient mule paths and Berber trade routes threading between traditional villages perched on rocky ridges — dramatically beautiful terrain that has been ridden by local guides for decades and has attracted an international MTB following for good reason.
The Routes
The 15km Imlil Valley Trail is the introduction — flowing down from Imlil through a series of Berber villages, crossing terraced agricultural land with Atlas peaks towering above. The 28km Toubkal Descent is the marquee ride — a guided point-to-point from altitude (3,000m+) descending via technical rocky mule paths to Imlil. The 20km Berber Village Circuit visits three traditional mountain villages, suitable for intermediate riders seeking cultural immersion as much as technical riding. The 45km High Atlas Traverse is a full-day point-to-point traversing the main Atlas ridge.
The Guide Culture
Imlil has a well-established guiding community with genuine MTB expertise. Using a local guide is strongly recommended — they provide mule support for portage sections, ensure access through private land, and deliver a cultural experience impossible to replicate independently.
Getting There
From Marrakech take the S501 south toward Asni (47km), then the mountain road to Imlil (17km). Regular taxis and transfers available from Marrakech Medina. GPS: 31.1358, -7.9167.
