Sossusvlei Desert Gravel — Namib-Naukluft
The Namib Desert is approximately 55 million years old — the oldest desert on earth — and the dunes around Sossusvlei are among its most dramatic features: Big Daddy rises 325m above the vlei floor in waves of apricot and crimson sand. The gravel routes threading through this landscape deliver riding of breathtaking visual intensity in an environment that requires complete self-sufficiency.
The Routes
The 15km Sesriem Canyon Gravel circles the Sesriem Canyon — a 30m deep slot canyon carved by the Tsauchab River — on well-maintained park roads suitable for any gravel bike. The 25km Elim Dune Circuit visits the lower dune system via a sand and gravel piste loop. The 40km Dead Vlei Desert Route is the full park experience — riding to the famous dead camel-thorn forest at Dead Vlei on compacted salt pan surface with the iconic dunes towering above. Park entry at first light is essential to beat the tourist vehicles and experience the dunes in golden hour light.
Getting There
From Windhoek take the B1 south to Rehoboth, then the C24 and D854 west to Sesriem (340km, approximately 4.5 hours). GPS: -24.5166, 15.7897.
