Arusha MTB Trails — Mount Meru Foothills
Arusha is Tanzania’s safari capital — the jumping-off point for Kilimanjaro, Serengeti and Ngorongoro. But the immediate surroundings of Mount Meru and Arusha National Park deliver MTB terrain that most passing safari tourists never discover. The volcanic soils, high rainfall and centuries of coffee cultivation have created a layered landscape of plantation roads, forest singletrack and open moorland that rides beautifully.
The Trails
The 15km Coffee Plantation Loop winds through the smallholder coffee and banana shambas on Meru’s lower slopes — flat to gently rolling, culturally rich, with views of Kilimanjaro on clear mornings. The 25km Meru Foothills Singletrack climbs higher into the park’s forest zone where elephant and buffalo are resident — guided riding essential here. The 20km Momella Lakes Circuit circles the series of crater lakes within the park, passing giraffe, hippo and the flamingos that seasonally populate the shallower lakes.
Getting There
From Arusha city take the road toward Usa River and follow signs to Arusha National Park. The Ngurdoto Gate is 25km from town. GPS: -3.2500, 36.7000.
