South Luangwa MTB Safari Trails
South Luangwa is the birthplace of the walking safari, and Tafika Camp has translated that up-close wildlife philosophy to mountain biking. This is not a trail network — it’s an MTB safari, with armed professional guides reading the bush, avoiding dangerous game, and positioning you for wildlife encounters that simply aren’t possible from a vehicle. Riding among elephant herds, past hippo pools and through leopard country on a mountain bike is an experience of irreducible intensity.
The Riding
The 20km Luangwa River Trail follows the Luangwa floodplain, through ebony and winterthorn forest that’s home to massive hippo populations and resident crocodile. The 12km Lagoon Loop circles the seasonal lagoons that attract concentrations of wildlife in the dry season — wildebeest, zebra, impala and their predators. The 8km Mfuwe Bush Singletrack is the technical route — narrow paths through dense riverine forest that require both bike skills and serious wildlife awareness.
The Tafika Experience
Tafika is a small, intimate bush camp operating at the premium end of the market. The MTB safari is one activity within a wider wildlife program. Rates include all meals, guided activities and park fees. Advance booking essential — camp opens June 1 each year and fills quickly for the peak August–October season.
