Junior mountain bikers set to shine at Fedhealth MTB Challenge Kids Event
SA’s future mountain biking heroes will be seen in action on Saturday, 07 September 2019 when they toe the line at the Boschendal Farm Estate (The Retreat) ready to experience the action of the 5th annual Fedhealth MTB Challenge Kids Event. A highlight on the SA mountain bike calendar, the kids event caters for ages 0 – 13 with junior MTB enthusiasts choosing between a: 500m (0-5 years), 1.5km (6-9 years) and a 5km (10 – 13 years) event.
“The Fedhealth MTB Challenge Kids Event is the perfect way to start a weekend of action-packed mountain biking,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director Stillwater Sports. “SA’s future mountain biking heroes will get to experience the exciting sport under the watchful eyes of their parents. The routes are safe and short enough for mom and dad to run alongside junior if they so wish. This event will not be timed, as it’s about having fun, enjoying the sport and spending time with families and friends.”
“We were chuffed to see so many young riders in action at the 2018 Fedhealth MTB Challenge Kids Event, just doing their thing, having fun and enjoying the scenery. We’re all about cultivating fit, healthy lifestyles from a young age, and events such as ours go a long way towards making that happen! We hope to see all our young riders on the start line again at the 2019 event,” says Jeremy Yatt, Fedhealth Principal Officer.
No stranger to the kids event, in 2018 Tyler Van Gesselleen (Stellenbosch) took part in the 500m event. “I enjoy mountain biking because I ride with my mom, dad, nanna and pops. I enjoy the jumps the most.”
Also taking part in the 500m event, Hannah Watts (Somerset West) proudly stated that she enjoyed the downhills the most. “I really enjoy downhills, but I am not crazy about the up-hills. The best part of the event was getting a medal.”
Sharing her sister’s sentiments, Nina Watts took part in the 1.5km event. “The event was good and I enjoyed the downhills the most.”
Best friends Josua du Plessis (Stellenbosch) and Herschelle Otto (Stellenbosch) challenged each other in the 5km Fedhealth MTB Challenge Kids Event.
“The route was great,” confirmed Josua. “It was nice and smooth with some hills. I enjoyed the rocky sections the most. That’s where I made up on time. I really enjoyed riding with Herschelle, he is my best friend.” Herschelle also enjoyed the rocky sections. “I enjoyed the rocks and jumps the most,” says Herschelle. “I definitely improved since 2017, but I have trained more. The race was a lot of fun.” Proving that it is a family event, Josua’s younger sister Mika also took on the 5km Fedhealth MTB Challenge Kids Event in 2018. “The route was very nice. I really enjoy riding and just entered to have fun.”
