Head past Mooi River and Rosetta into the southern Berg, and you will soon revel in the beauty of the scenic Kamberg Nature Reserve. Unfortunately you pass through a slightly unsavoury settlement right on the reserve boundary, and this detracts from the feeling that you are about to escape into nature. Despite faint sounds of drunken disorderliness disturbing the night-time calls of Verraux Eagle Owls, Kamberg is still a gorgeous destination and should be on your itinerary.
On your bike
This is one of the most straight-forward rides you could do, so no need to pack a GPS … From the Kamberg Camp Site cottages, head down the cement dual-track towards the trout dams (900m), where you turn right onto a very short section of paved road.
The jeep-track starts 300m later; ignore the NO ENTRY sign as it is for vehicles only, and continue up a gritty little climb onto the grassy foothills of Kamberg. At 3.9km, the route splits: if you keep to the left, you get to the old Roman Baths, but this is now only a ruin. So rather hang a right, along the tussocky dual-track, alternating between sharp ascents and juddery downhills.
At 5.6km, you start winding down towards the Mooi River (6.6km), and unfortunately the route goes no further than this. Take a drink from this clear mountain stream, then hit the track back to camp.
