Lejweleputswa Goldfields Loop
The Lejweleputswa Goldfields Loop offers a riding experience unlike anywhere else in South Africa — a 40km gravel circuit through the sprawling Free State goldfields between Virginia and Welkom, where decades of gold mining have created a distinctive landscape of conical mine dumps, headgear structures and flat industrial plains set against the open Highveld sky.
What to Expect
Flat to gently rolling terrain on gravel and dirt roads through the goldfields industrial zone. The riding is not technically demanding but the distance and exposed Highveld conditions make it a genuine intermediate effort. The landscape is unique — mine dumps cast dramatic shadows, headgear structures punctuate the skyline and the sense of industrial scale is remarkable.
A Distinctly South African Experience
The goldfields of the Free State represent a specific chapter in South African industrial history — the Lejweleputswa district (meaning place of the polecat in Sesotho) was the last great South African gold rush. Riding through it is an encounter with living industrial heritage.
