Okiep Mining Heritage MTB Trail
Okiep is one of the most historically significant small towns in South Africa — the site of South Africa’s first commercially viable copper mine, worked from 1685 and still producing copper ore until 1919. The corrugated iron buildings, mine headgear and the grand Okiep Country Hotel (built in 1858 for mine management) stand as testament to a copper boom that drew miners and engineers from across the British Empire to this remote Namaqualand hillside.
MTB on the Copper Mountains
The terrain around Okiep — rocky granite desert landscape with mine tracks, farm roads and jeep tracks winding through the copper-rich Namaqualand mountains — has found a natural second life as MTB terrain. The Namaqua Quest 3-Day MTB and Trail Running Stage Race (held each September) uses Okiep as the venue for Day 1, taking cyclists through the copper mountain landscape past mine heritage sites with Namaqualand wildflowers as a backdrop. It is a riding experience entirely unlike anything available in the rest of South Africa — remote, historically layered and visually extraordinary.
The Concordia settlement and its renowned quiver tree groves (17km from Springbok, between Okiep and Springbok) provide a natural extension for independent riders exploring the area. The quiver trees (kokerbome) here are among the finest specimens in the Northern Cape, particularly photogenic at sunrise and sunset.
Namaqua Quest Event
The annual Namaqua Quest (namaquaquest.co.za) is the organized gateway to riding this terrain properly — with route-marked trails, full event support, massage, medical backup at the Okiep Country Hotel and the unmatched experience of riding the copper mountains in full spring flower. Limited to 200 entries. Event held in September.
