Wakkerstroom

There are many quiet, safe roads to ride on in the area. Some of the routes have challenging hills and there are some fairly technical routes.

Ride One (approximately 14 km)

This ride goes around the wetland and is very easy. Take the Amersfoort Road out of the village (the tar road that crosses the wetland at the east end of the village). Immediately after crossing the wetland, take the first left and keep going left. You will pass the Oude Stasie Pub on your right. Follow the road until you get to the tarred road (the road from Volksrust.) Here you can either turn left and take the tar road back to the village or retrace your ride along the gravel road.

Ride Two (approximately 22 km)

This ride goes through beautiful countryside and involves some jeep track riding. As in ride one, cross the wetland on the Amersfoort road (tar), but then go straight after you have crossed the wetland. The road becomes gravel. A short, steepish hill follows. Take the first road to the right and follow this road. It becomes pretty rough. You will cross two streams, the first is a bridge and the second a concrete causeway. After the second you will pass a farm worker’s house and kraal on your left. Carry on and shortly you will get to a proper gravel road. Go right and follow this until you get to a tarred road, turn right again and this is the road back to the village.

Ride Three (approximately 50km)

Take the road back to Volksrust, after approx 20km, there is a dirt road to the left sign posted “Utrecht”. Take this and follow this road, turning left when there is a fork or turn off. Eventually you will come out on the road around the Zaaihoek dam. Turn left again and the road leads back to Wakkerstroom.

This serves as a guide to the cycle routes.

Cyclists undertake these routes entirely at their own risk.

Ossewakop

There are many pathways on the mountain. Read the brochure on Ossewakop Hikes. Find a path and follow it and make up your own challenging ride on the mountain.

There is also the track that leads up the back of Ossewakop. Take the Utrecht road at the east end of the village go up the hill , pass the Paulpietersberg turnoff on your left . Shortly after this there is an old gate on your right . Go through this and follow the track across the veldt , to the steep track that leads up the mountain . After the next ”gate” , turn right and follow the track to the trig beacon at the very top of the mountain .

Further rides

For other rides of 40 km plus , do any of the birding loops described in Warwick Tarboton’s book on Wakkerstroom . There is a map on the inside back cover of the book . The book is available at the Wine Glass and other shops in Wakkerstroom .

We recommend two of the loops .

The first is the Groenvlei loop (40km) , take the Utrecht road at the east end of the village. Go up the long hill and straight past the left hand turn off to Paulpietersburg (that is your return leg) . You will then cross into Kwa Zulu Natal . After some exciting hills , take the first road that you come to on the left .The road follows the Slang River valley . The next 10km are a fairly easy undulating ride . You will then get to a T junction . Turn left and from now on it is hard work back to the Paulpietersburg turn off that you passed earlier . When you get there turn right and it is the long downhill back into town .You can of course , do it the other way round .

The other loop is approx 50km , cross the wetland on the Amersfoort road and keep going up the hill . Take the left turn to Volksrust . Keep going until you get to a T junction , turn right , carry on , next right and you will come back to the Amersfoort road . Turn right and follow back to Wakkerstroom.
