Witsand Nature Reserve MTB Loop

Witsand Nature Reserve is one of the Northern Cape’s most remarkable natural phenomena — a 2,500-hectare island of brilliant white sand dunes rising up to 60 metres high in the middle of the red Kalahari, surrounded by acacia woodland and the Langberg mountain range. The white dunes have been bleached by a natural spring reservoir beneath them that has gradually leached the red iron oxide from the sand over millions of years, creating a visual contrast — brilliant white rising from blood-orange Kalahari — that is unlike anything else in South Africa.

The Roaring Sands

Witsand’s most famous feature is the Brulsand — the Roaring Sands. When conditions are hot, dry and the correct thermal pressure exists, the millions of white sand grains rubbing together emit a deep, reverberating hum audible from a considerable distance. Local legend holds that the dunes only roar in months spelled with an ‘R’ — September, October, November, December, January, February and March. Cycling up to the crest of the white dunes and triggering the roar by sliding or running down them is an extraordinary sensory experience.

Mountain Biking at Witsand

The reserve has 30-40km of gravel roads and tracks winding through its borders — acacia woodland, rocky Langberg slopes and the white dune fields — providing 2-4 hours of varied riding. The adjacent Kalahari Mountain View Dune Trail (on a private neighbouring farm, accessible to Witsand visitors) adds a 27km formal trail incorporating 23km of sand-dune terrain and 4km of mountain section. Bicycle hire is available at reception, making Witsand one of the few Northern Cape reserves accessible to riders without their own bikes. Sociable weaver nests, Pygmy Falcons, Secretary Birds and the elusive pangolin (nocturnal) are among the wildlife highlights.

Getting There

From Olifantshoek (on the N14): take the Witsand turn-off 5km west of town, then 75km on gravel road. From Groblershoop (N8): Witsand turn-off, then 45km gravel. GPS: -27.8667, 22.5000.
