Kroonstad Gravel Grind

Kroonstad is the major town of the central Free State — well-serviced, strategically placed on the N1 and surrounded by productive Highveld farmland threaded with gravel roads. The 50km Gravel Grind is a proper gravel cycling challenge that pushes out into the surrounding farm road network for a half-day effort through classic Free State countryside.

What to Expect

50km of gravel roads across gently rolling to moderately hilly Highveld terrain. The Vals River valley provides topographic interest in an otherwise flat landscape, with the river crossing and surrounding valley sections being the scenic highlights of the route. At 50km this is the longest flat gravel route in the province — carry plenty of water and food.
