Parys Vredefort Dome Loop

The Vredefort Dome is the world’s largest and oldest verified meteorite impact crater — a 2-billion-year-old geological structure 160km in diameter centred near Parys. The 45km MTB loop traces the dome’s distinctive terrain around the Vaal River, crossing ancient metamorphic and igneous rock formations that exist nowhere else on Earth.

What to Expect

Gravel roads and rocky singletrack cross the dome’s varied geological terrain. The ancient impact structure creates dramatic topography — pseudotachylite veins in the rock, shatter cones and eroded dykes create natural trail features unlike any other riding environment in South Africa. The Vaal River gorge section is particularly dramatic.

UNESCO Heritage Context

The Vredefort Dome was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005 for its outstanding geological significance. Riding through it is a genuinely extraordinary experience — the ancient rocks beneath your wheels are 3.5 billion years old.
