Winburg Voortrekker Loop

Winburg has the distinction of being the oldest town in the Free State — established by the Voortrekkers in 1842 and named for a battle victory. The historic town on the N1 sits surrounded by the same open Highveld landscape that the pioneers encountered, and the 33km Voortrekker Loop follows gravel roads through countryside that has changed remarkably little since the 19th century.

What to Expect

Gravel farm roads on flat to gently rolling central Highveld terrain through a working agricultural landscape. The riding is intermediate in effort and accessible to most cyclists. Historic farm buildings, stone walls and the characteristic Afrikaner farming landscape give the route a genuine sense of historical continuity — these roads follow the same routes that ox wagons once travelled.

Winburg’s Heritage

The town has several historical sites associated with the Voortrekker era and the Anglo-Boer War. The Winburg Monument, dedicated to Voortrekker history, is worth visiting before or after the ride to contextualise the landscape you’ve just ridden through.
