Ficksburg Sandstone Challenge

The Ficksburg Sandstone Challenge is the eastern Free State’s most demanding MTB route — a 45km advanced loop over the dramatic red sandstone mountains and kloofs that surround Ficksburg near the Lesotho border. The sandstone terrain is both beautiful and technical, with natural rock features, exposed ridge traverses and steep descents through narrow kloofs.

What to Expect

Technical sandstone singletrack is the defining feature of this route. The red and orange rock formations unique to this corner of the Free State create natural trail furniture — rock slabs, narrow ledges and natural chutes that reward committed, skilled riding. The views from the upper sections stretch across the Caledon River valley to the Lesotho highlands.

Practical Notes

This is a serious advanced ride — fitness, technical skill and full self-sufficiency are required. Download the GPX track from Trailforks before riding. Carry 3L+ of water and emergency supplies. Wet sandstone is extremely slippery — avoid riding after rain.
