Harrismith Platberg Ascent
The Platberg is Harrismith’s defining landmark — a dramatic flat-topped mountain (tabletop) that rises abruptly from the Highveld plains to 2,394m above sea level. The Platberg Ascent is an 18km advanced MTB route that climbs the mountain’s rocky flanks to reach the expansive plateau summit, delivering 360-degree views across the Drakensberg, Highveld and KwaZulu-Natal border.
What to Expect
The ascent is technically demanding — rocky singletrack and steep mountain paths require genuine technical skill and fitness to ride cleanly. The plateau sections involve riding across the flat summit terrain with extraordinary views in all directions. The descent demands full technical capability on loose rocky terrain. This is a serious advanced route.
The Summit Experience
From the Platberg summit, the Drakensberg escarpment, the Van Reenen Pass and the vast Highveld plains below are all visible on clear days. The summit plateau is a unique environment — sub-alpine grassland with rare plant species and raptors overhead.
