Nylsvley Nature Reserve Loop

Nylsvley Nature Reserve protects the Nyl River Flood Plain — the largest natural flood plain in southern Africa and one of the continent’s most significant waterbird habitats. Declared a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, the flood plain attracts up to 70,000 waterbirds when inundated — concentrations of pelicans, herons, storks, ibises and waders that create one of South Africa’s most spectacular natural wildlife displays. The flat reserve roads provide easy cycling access through this exceptional habitat. Check with SANParks for current MTB access permissions before visiting.

What to Expect

Flat gravel reserve roads on entirely flat flood plain terrain. The riding is easy — the attraction is the extraordinary birdlife. Whether flooded (October–April) or dry (May–September), the Nyl flood plain has remarkable bird diversity. Over 400 bird species have been recorded in the reserve. Plan for an early morning ride with extended bird-watching stops.
