Lüderitz Desert MTB Festival Trails
Lüderitz sits at the southern edge of the Namib Desert where the desert meets the Atlantic — a remote, wind-scoured colonial town surrounded by one of the most visually arresting landscapes on earth. The MTB trails here thread past the sand-filled rooms of the Kolmanskop diamond ghost town, along Atlantic-facing ridges, and through classic Namib dune country.
The Trails
The 8km Shark Island Loop is the accessible intro route — circling the Shark Island peninsula with ocean views throughout. The 12km Kolmanskop Desert Trail is the signature route, passing the exterior of the ghost town through the surrounding desert, with views across the dune sea. The 28km Diamond Dunes Challenge is the serious undertaking — deep desert navigation, dune riding and sustained effort in an environment that punishes any mechanical failure.
Kolmanskop
This early 20th century diamond mining town was abandoned in 1954 and the Namib has been slowly reclaiming it ever since. Sand drifts through the windows of the German colonial buildings at knee to chest height. Entry requires a guided tour permit — worth doing before or after the ride.
Getting There
Lüderitz is 340km southwest of Keetmanshoop on the B4. The airstrip has flights from Windhoek. GPS: -26.6481, 15.1593.
