Machame MTB Trails — Kilimanjaro Foothills
The Machame route is Kilimanjaro’s most popular trekking route — and the lower sections of its approach through dense rainforest and coffee shambas are among East Africa’s most spectacular MTB terrain. The scale of Kilimanjaro is overwhelming: the mountain rises over 4,000m from the surrounding plains, creating a complete altitudinal transect from tropical farmland to arctic glacier within 50km of horizontal distance.
The Trails
The 18km Machame Gate Trail uses the lower trekking route before the national park boundary — coffee farms, banana groves and dense forest singletrack with the mountain ever-present above. The 25km Shira Plateau Approach (with park permit) climbs higher into the heath zone above the treeline, crossing moorland at 3,500m with jaw-dropping summit views. The 12km Coffee Belt Circuit is the accessible community ride — visiting coffee washing stations, Chagga homesteads and viewpoints over the Kilimanjaro massif.
Getting There
