Sebastian Stark and Nicky Giliomee prevailed against the elements, on a day when the heavens opened over the Prince Alfred’s Pass, to win the 2019 BUCO Karoo to Coast.
The 2019 BUCO Karoo to Coast may not feature any professional mountain bikers but with a host of top amateurs taking part victory, in South Africa’s largest single day event, is sure to be fiercely contested. The 96-kilometre route, from the Karoo town of Uniondale to Knysna on the Indian Ocean coast, features 1 560 metres of accumulated elevation gain. While those figures may sound relatively benign, especially when viewed in conjunction with the route profile, which trends deceptively downhill towards the sea, the riders will be in for a tough day on their bikes.
The final stage of the 2019 BUCO Dr Evil Classic concluded three fantastic days of mountain biking with a singletrack packed stage around the Cairnbrogie and Harkerville trails on Saturday, 21 September. Matthew Leppan sprinted to his second stage victory of the race, holding off Martin Schuttertt; who wrapped-up the overall title. In the solo women’s race Nicky Giliomee completed the perfect hattrick of wins to comprehensively secure general classification honours.
Siphe Ncapayi finished the opening stage of the BUCO Dr Evil Classic 11 minutes and 2 seconds behind the stage winner. On Friday’s Stage 2, which started and finished at Kurland Hotel, he reduced that deficit to just 34 seconds. With two third place finishes now to his name, it is clear that, the Kwano Cycling Academy rider is one of the race’s stand out performers.

Registration for the 2019 BUCO Dr Evil Classic took place at the Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve on Wednesday, 18 September. Situated inland, on a plateau between the Bietou and Keurbooms Rivers, from the coastal resort town and its idyllic white sand beaches the Game Reserve boasts three of the Big Five.
