Melville Koppies is one of Johannesburg’s best-kept secrets — a granite koppie nature reserve in the inner-west suburb of Melville, 5km from the CBD, containing Iron Age stone ruins, protected indigenous vegetation and a short but genuinely steep and rocky trail circuit with city views from the top. The reserve is managed as a conservation area with guided access only on weekend mornings, which keeps visitor numbers low and the experience intimate.

The Trail

The Melville Koppies circuit is short but surprisingly technical — the granite koppie rises steeply from the surrounding suburb and the trail climbs it directly, with loose rocky surface, exposed step sections and a summit section where the full Johannesburg skyline is visible across the northern suburbs. The Iron Age ruins on the upper koppie — stone-walled cattle enclosures from settlements dated to several hundred years before European arrival — are preserved within the conservation area and visible alongside the trail route. The descent is equally steep and rocky, returning through indigenous bushveld to the conservation centre entrance.

Access Note

Melville Koppies operates on a guided access model to protect the conservation area — confirm current MTB access and tour schedule with the centre before visiting. The conservation approach means this is a more structured experience than a typical trail ride, but the urban location and archaeological significance make it worth the extra step.

Getting There

Melville Koppies entrance: Judith Road, Melville. GPS: -26.1833, 28.0000. Tel: +27 11 726 2869. From Johannesburg CBD: Empire Road west toward Melville.
